Qualities of a Good Interior Designer
Interior Design is the science and art of improving the interior of a commercial or residential building in order to create a more aesthetically pleasant environment for those using the interior space. An interior designer is a person who plans, studies, coordinates and executes such interior improvement projects. These projects may be for remodeling a space, building a new space, adapting an existing space for a more comfortable or convenient experience, or for building a home that blends with its surrounding community. In addition to these projects, an interior designer also may work on public relations and educational planning, in order to create a positive image or promote a specific idea or concept.
Interior design can be broken down into two main categories: designing for the inside or designing for the outdoors. Planning is used when creating a layout or the arrangement of furniture, lighting, heating and AC systems, windows and doors, as well as any other exterior elements, like landscaping, parking structures, storage areas and walkways. Designing for the outdoors involves preparing the exterior of the structure for maintenance and/or beautification or reconfiguring it to match the current use of the space, including any desired design change for accessibility or environmental considerations. Many designers work for architectural firms, which are responsible for designing the entire building’s exterior. Others work for home builders or smaller interior design firms. Other individuals may work in manufacturing plants, restaurants, museums and galleries, hospitals and other facilities.
- An interior designer must be very creative, detail-oriented, intuitive and detail-oriented. Their works often make use of computers and a variety of design and technical aids. Interior design is a multi disciplines process and involves many different types of skill sets and knowledge.
- A degree in Interior Design is usually required by schools, colleges and universities. Those wishing to pursue careers as interior designers have an assortment of formal education, from art history to fine arts and technical programs. Some choose to obtain their education through a four-year college while others gain their education through a combination of formal education and on-the-job training.
- Interior designers are required to have a wide range of skills. They are required to develop floor plans and blueprints, but they’re also responsible for choosing flooring, wall coverings, window treatments, countertops, cabinets, lighting, faucets, fixtures, accessories and furniture. It is important to understand that the role of an interior decorator plays is multifaceted and they must be able to work with a large number of people and multiple projects throughout the day. Most importantly, interior designers need to possess excellent communication skills. Communication is key in creating a space that enhances the homeowner’s lifestyle.
An interior decorator must be organized. This includes scheduling appointments, delegating tasks and managing time. Interior designers need to be detail oriented. Being detail oriented, can be difficult because most of their work requires pre-planning and designing. However, if a designer can plan and then execute their plans, their work will be detailed, accurate and customer focused.
